August Seasonal Bloom

August 6, 2014

You’ve probably seen these unusual spiral shaped stems and wonder what they are. They’ve been called many things over the years, from fiddle head, monkey tails, and to what most refer to it as fern curls.

It’s actually new growth of a giant fern that grows in Hawaii. (weird, I know!) The new growth uncurls from the center of the plant forming the spiral shape fiddle head. The stem color is available in burgundy and green in shade.  They are a bit fragile and pricey for the size. As the spiral is not that much larger than a half dollar and can snap off very easily. (Lesson learned the hard way)  So with any unique delicate item like this, we would recommend using them in select detailed pieces, such as bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces.
